Baked Macaroni and Cheese for the Ultimate Comfort Food

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz elbow macaroni (about 2 cups)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for a bit of heat)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Macaroni:
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  1. Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
  • In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux and starts to turn golden.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream. Continue to cook and whisk until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Reduce heat to low and add the shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.
  1. Combine Pasta and Sauce:
  • Stir the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce, making sure all the pasta is well-coated.
  • Mix in the sour cream and mayonnaise for extra creaminess. Adjust seasoning if needed.
  1. Bake the Macaroni and Cheese:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  1. Bake:
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
  1. Serve:
  • Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy your delicious macaroni and cheese, perfect for a comforting meal or as a side dish at your next gathering!
