Baked Macaroni and Cheese for the Ultimate Comfort Food
Ingredients:
- 8 oz elbow macaroni (about 2 cups)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for a bit of heat)
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
Instructions:
- Cook the Macaroni:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the Cheese Sauce:
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux and starts to turn golden.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream. Continue to cook and whisk until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and add the shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.
- Combine Pasta and Sauce:
- Stir the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce, making sure all the pasta is well-coated.
- Mix in the sour cream and mayonnaise for extra creaminess. Adjust seasoning if needed.
- Bake the Macaroni and Cheese:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
- Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
Enjoy your delicious macaroni and cheese, perfect for a comforting meal or as a side dish at your next gathering!
